A new extra-resistant €10 note will come into circulation on September 23, the European Central Bank has announced. The new note will be “easily recognisable due to the likeness to its predecessor, but more long-lasting.
The new design incorporates state-of-the-art advances in banknote technology, making the note even more difficult to counterfeit.
Over time, all euro banknotes will be updated, said the bank.
Meantime, the number of counterfeit €500 notes apprehended by the authorities last year reached the seven-year high of 651 – more than 17 times the number of false notes pulled-in in 2012. But according to Carlos Costa, governor of the Bank of Portugal, the total number of counterfeit notes seized last year – 11,228 – was in fact 2.4% down on the number apprehended in 2012.
