New budget supermarket for Lagoa

A NEW low cost supermarket will open in Lagoa in June, adjacent to the municipal Bombeiros station, The Resident has learned this week. In recent months, many locals had been speculating that a fast food restaurant was due to open on the site, a rumour that has now proved unfounded.

The new store is being built by Os Mosqueteiros Group, which already has several Intermarché and Ecomarché supermarkets in the Algarve, however, the brand of this particular supermarket is yet to be announced.

“What I am allowed to tell you is that it will be a first in the Algarve and that the store will be offering super discounted prices,” Jorge Pinheiro, director of the Intermarché store in Lagoa, told The Resident’s Caroline Cunha. “Construction has already started and we hope to have the store ready to open within three to four months. The building will have just one level and occupy a total area of 480sqm.” Pinheiro also confirmed that the store would be providing 10 new jobs in the area.

Good news for firefighters

The land on which the supermarket is being built is owned by the Lagoa Bombeiros, meaning that, thanks to the opening of the new store, the firefighters will receive much needed funds in the form of rent each month. Therefore, the new store not only represents good news for thrifty shoppers but also for the fire service and the community as a whole.
