The new British Ambassador to Portugal is expected to take up his post before the end of October. John Stephen Buck succeeds Dame Glynne Evans DBE CMG, who retired at the end of August from the diplomatic service.
He is due to informally meet and greet key figures in the British expatriate business and social community on Thursday, October 14, at 6.30pm, at the British Ambassador’s temporary residence near Ajuda.
Buck, aged 51, is married to Jean and has two children. He began his diplomatic career in 1980 and had served in Lisbon between 1988 and 1992 as Lisbon Embassy’s Head of Chancellery. His most recent post, however, was at the British Foreign Office, between 2003 and 2004, in a department dealing with affairs relating to Iraq.
Serving briefly in Baghdad, in 2003, he was also attached to the Prime Minister’s Office at Number 10 Downing Street during the Iraq crisis. Between 2000 and 2003 Buck was Director of the Public Relations and Information Department at the Foreign Office.
Other posts John Buck has held include Adviser and Deputy Head of Mission at the British Embassy in Nicosia (1996-2000), Adviser to the Cabinet Office (1994-1996) and work within the Southern European Department at the Foreign Office between 1992 and 1994.
