New bishop

A NEW bishop for Lisbon, nominated by Pope Bento XVI, was ordained on Sunday at a ceremony at the Jerónimos monastery.

Joaquim da Silva Mendes, 60, has been elected as an auxiliary bishop for the Lisbon Patriarchy. The decision was taken by the Pope because of the large number of Catholics in the Lisbon area.

The new bishop was sworn in by José da Cruz Policarpo, Cardinal of Lisbon, Manuel Clemente, Bishop of Porto, and Gilberto Canavaro dos Reis, Bishop of Setúbal in a ceremony attended by around 40 Portuguese bishops.
