New Aljezur road announced

Estradas de Portugal, the national roads company, has announced the public tender for the construction of the new Aljezur bypass, set to cost 362,000 euros.

At the moment, the narrow EN120 road through the village, which is not build for heavy traffic, is often the scene of chaos with cars and lorries stuck in traffic jams.

Aljezur Câmara president Manuel Marreiros says the new bypass has been an old dream of his and local residents. The road is expected to be built as soon as its project is approved.

Ana Rocha from Lagoa, who every year attends the Sudoeste Festival in Zambujeira do Mar (Alentejo), told the Algarve Resident that driving through Aljezur to get there is “a nightmare”

“The festival is in August so you can imagine what it is like to be stuck in a hot car for hours trying to drive through Aljezur,” he said. “This road will be most welcome.”
