New Algarve hospital board appointed

Previous administration’s term ended in December

After a long delay, a new Board of Directors has finally been appointed for the Algarve University Hospital Centre (CHUA). The announcement was made today by the Executive Board of the National Health Service (SNS).

The new president of the CHUA board will be João Ferreira, who will replace Ana Varges Gomes.

Some of João Ferreira’s previous jobs include being Administrator and CEO of Hospital de Vila Franca de Xira (2019-2021), Administrator and CEO of Hospital de Braga (2011-2019), and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Centro Hospitalar de Vila Nova de Gaia/Espinho, E.P.E. (2006-2011).

He also served as a non-executive member of the Board of Directors of CUF in 2022 and holding non-executive board positions at Hospital de Vila Franca de Xira and CUF hospital units in the ‘Northern Cluster’ from 2012 to 2022.

Meanwhile, the Clinical Board of CHUA will be led by José Almeida, who will be assisted by Executive Member, Paulo Neves, who will retain his position, as well as Mariana Augusta Mata Santos, who will continue as the Director of Nursing.

The term of the previous administration, led by Ana Varges Gomes, had ended on December 31, 2022. However, it remained in charge of CHUA as no new board had been appointed until now.

Says the SNS Executive Board, this new CHUA administration was appointed “based on integrity, experience, and professional qualifications” for the 2023-2025 term.

It also thanks the “outgoing team members for their work” and says it has renewed its  commitment to “consolidate the management of National Health Service units and to defend a public health service that meets the needs of the population.”

The new board will take over on November 1.
