Lagos Zoo celebrated the birth of a pink-backed pelican (Pelecanus rufescens) on March 20.
The newest addition to the zoo joined five other pelicans of the same species, one also born at the zoo a year ago.
Although the Pink-backed pelican is not on the list of endangered animal species, it is a “very difficult bird to breed in captivity”, a spokesman for the zoo told the Algarve Resident, adding that the birth was a memorable moment for the staff.
This species of pelican originates from the tropical and subtropical African countries, such as Senegal, Ethiopia and Madagascar.
