Life sentence for Van Gogh’s killer

A DUTCH court has sentenced a 27-year-old radical Islamist to life in prison for the November murder of controversial filmmaker Theo Van Gogh.

Mohammed Bouyeri, who has joint Dutch-Moroccan nationality, had made a courtroom confession and had vowed to do the same again if given the opportunity. The murder in Amsterdam stunned the Netherlands. The court ruled that it was a terrorist act and prosecutors said the murder sparked ethnic unrest and harmed Dutch society. During the trial, Bouyeri gave the court little insight into why he killed Theo Van Gogh.

Twelve other terrorism suspects are awaiting trial in Holland and prosecutors believe Bouyeri is a key figure in that group, but so far they have not come up with enough evidence to charge him.
