PORTUGUESE-CANADIAN singer, Nelly Furtado, has been confirmed to play in the Algarve, at Albufeira’s Estádio Municipal on July 27.
Câmara President, Desidério Silva has confirmed that there will be at least one other major international artist performing in Albufeira in the summer and will be announcing the full programme for the season events on May 4.
Nelly Furtado last played in the Algarve at Albufeira’s Fisherman Beach 2004 New Year’s Eve party, but since then has achieved far more global success with her latest album Loose. As a result, it’s likely the concert in the Estádio Municipal will be a far more flamboyant affair and attract a lot of media and public attention.
Although the singer was born in Victoria in British Columbia, Canada, Furtado is the daughter of emigrants from the Azores and often makes reference to her Portuguese roots in her music and lifestyle.
The concert is not part of the package of events sponsored by the controversially titled programme, Allgarve, which is being organised by the government to raise the profile of Algarve tourism. Albufeira Câmara President has expressed his discontent at being left out of this programme but has already held a meeting with the Minister of the Economy to request other events for the city.
Dulce Pontes, Mickael Carreira, Katia Guerreiro, Rodrigo Leão and Rui Veloso are some of the other big names who have already been confirmed for Albufeira’s entertainment programme during the summer months.
Ticket prices for the Nelly Furtado concert and information on where they can be obtained will be released in the coming weeks.
