Negotiation on public transport travel passes

MINISTER OF Transport and public works, Ana Paula Vitorino, will need to go back to the negotiating table with private transport companies in 2007, in order to rework the public service pricing policy.

Sandra Silva, a spokesperson for Ana Paula Vitorino said: “It would be necessary to calculate the price of government subsidised social transport passes for the underground, railways and coaches on an annual basis, given the fluctuations in petrol prices”.

Last week, the government reached an agreement with private transport companies in exchange for 9.4 million euros worth of compensation.

The new contract will remain valid until July 2007, when the deal will need to be renegotiated.

Transport passes are only likely to be put up within that time if service and operational costs go up by more than one per cent.
