Nearly 6,000 euros raised for Lagoa Bombeiros!

THE RESTAURANT in Fatacil, Lagoa, was swinging to the sound of the Pink Cadillacs recently as more than 150 people celebrated the fifth yearly dinner dance to support the Lagoa Bombeiros Voluntários. The evening raised a total of 3,224 euros.

We were grateful for the generous donations from HOME Hodson & Bancroft Lda, Monte Dourado in Carvoeiro and Ian Frankland from Porterreno S.A. The raffle prizes were extra special this year and included: a weekend for two at the Hotel Garbe in Armação de Pêra, a 25-minute flightseeing trip from Alvor, a romantic dinner for two at Restaurant L’Orange in Carvoeiro, a 125-euro gift voucher from E LeClerc, a cake from Sweet Marilyn, a 50-euro travel gift voucher from PDM travel, a table from Style Furnishings in Vale de Lousas, an afternoon of pampering from Crystal Clear at Boca do Rio, a lamp from Eclectica, a coffee-maker from Jacobs, a travel hair dryer from Martins electrics in Portimão, wine from Sr. Lima at the Fatacil restaurant, a goodies basket filled to the brim from Intermarché, jewellery from Imagine in Carvoeiro and pottery from O Baú D’Avó. The raffle raised a total of 1,000 euros. The bombeiros had made a plaque with the nozzle of a hose from 1970, mounted with an engraving, which was auctioned and raised a further 200 euros.

Other generous donations have been received in the past from Carvoeiro Golf and Country Club, golfers from Mungo’s Bar in Carvoeiro, Mandy’s Ladies Night, Kathy Lancaster from The Village Inn and also private donations for which we have been extremely grateful. Your donations have helped to buy equipment and clothing for the bombeiros, but now we need to purchase more to replace that which was burned and damaged during last year’s firefighting and to prepare our firefighters for this coming summer.

Calendar Boys

Last year, we thought it would be fun to introduce a 2005 Bombeiros Calendar. This was a real task, especially trying to get the bombeiros together during the difficult summer months. The Lagoa Bombeiros Fund received 2,621.14 euros from the calendar sale, which was only made possible thanks for the photography provided freely by Nuno Campos and the following businesses which each sponsored a month of the calendar: The Resident, AFPOP, Hawker Design & Publication, R.S.A.Campos de Ténis Lda, BUPA International, Sovereign Consultoria e Planeamento Fiscal Lda, Porterreno S.A. Administração do Monte Carvoeiro, Freemaps, Prosecom, Vale D’Oliveiras Resort and Spa Carvoeiro, Canary Wharf Publicações Unipessoal Lda and Val Johnstone (private nurse), first aid instructor. With the sale of the calendars and the dance, we raised a grand total of 5,845 euros. Both these events took a lot of time and effort, and thanks go to organisers Maria Taylor, Halcyon Cann, Chris Myatt and Júlia de Freitas for all their help
