Nazaré reopens beaches to surfers

Following on from the example of Oeiras last week, the municipality of Nazaré has reopened its beaches to surfers, on the basis that they practice their sport individually and “comply scrupulously with DGS health authority determinations and other legislation in force, including the rules of the Portuguese Surfing Federation”. Nazaré is internationally famous for its ‘big waves’, attracting surfers from all over the globe – and benefiting economically from the sport. Because of the pandemic however, the beaches have been periodically closed to surfers – this latest ban having been in place since January.
