Navy drug bust

Two men, one of German nationality, were arrested by the maritime police after their sailing boat was found to contain more than 4.6 tonnes of cannabis around 10 nautical miles from the coast of Armação de Pêra on June 22.

A spokesman from the Maritime Police told the Algarve Resident that the discovery was made as part of a routine inspection by the maritime police’s rapid response boat Sagitário as part of operation Frontex. Suspicions were raised when one of the two men in the boat, the Captain Morgan, did not have any identification.

A search of the boat revealed the drugs sealed up in more than 100 packets, which led to the boat being confiscated and taken to Portimão port, while the two men were taken into the custody of the Polícia Judiciária.
