Navy drones to start patrolling Portugal’s coast

Commemorating its 700th anniversary on Friday, the Portuguese Navy is taking delivery of a new fleet of “crewless air vehicles” (aka drones).

The idea is for the drones to ‘patrol’ the coastline and monitor other naval ops.

The devices will be ‘flown’ by a special unit attached to the helicopter squadron at Montijo.

For now, there is no indication of how many drones are involved.

But the news suggests that naval insistence on perfecting the use of this new form of technology will have improved since experiments in the early days (click here).
