Vila do Bispo Câmara has put its natural reserve, the Reserva Biogenética de Sagres, forward as a candidate for the seven natural wonders of Portugal competition.
The natural reserve was created in 1988 by the European Council to safeguard the large diversity of species and natural habitats in the Cape Saint Vincent area, which is a unique territory due to its location and the influence from the Mediterranean and the Atlantic.
Around 25 species of bird nest in the cliffs of Cape Saint Vincent while there are many rare flora species which make the area unique.
The New 7 Wonders of Portugal project aims to select seven national natural wonders that have one or more rare aspects, ecologically, scientifically or culturally for example, under the theme “If we want to protect something, we have to appreciate it in the first place.”
Nominations are organised into the following seven categories: marine, caves, beaches and cliffs, forests and woodlands, peaks, protected areas and non marine.
The final winners will be announced in Lagoa das Sete Cidades on the island of São Miguel, Azores on September 11.
