Nationwide weather warning

Nationwide weather warning

A national warning advising people throughout Portugal to take special care when out and about tonight (November 27) and tomorrow has been launched by Portugal’s Civil Protection Authority (ANPC).
Heavy rain and strong winds are expected across the country, with the worst of the weather forecast for the centre and south of Portugal between 9pm tonight and 3am tomorrow. Northern regions are expected to be worst hit between 3am and 9am tomorrow.
IPMA, Portugal’s Sea and Atmosphere Institute, adds that we could get this year’s first snowfalls in the mountain ranges of Serra da Estrela, Gerês, Montesinho and Estrela.
Rough seas, with waves of up to 4-5 metres, will almost certainly accompany the bad weather.
ANPC warns that if forecasts are right, drainage systems may clog up and cause flooding. The authority is therefore warning people over unstable structures, adding that trees and vegetation may give way under the strain.
Thus they recommend people:
• Ensure drainage systems do not become clogged.
• Tie up or prevent any loose structures from being blown away with the wind.
• Take care when driving. Do not drive through flooded areas and pay special attention while driving in areas where trees and vegetation may be partially blocking the roads or near the coast.
• Follow weather bulletins (IPMA) and recommendations from ANPC and other authorities.
