Mystery in Sagres as body is found at foot of cliffs

It has been an unsettling Christmas mystery: the body of a young woman was discovered on Saturday December 23 at the foot of cliffs leading down to Beliche beach in Sagres, but to this day there appear to be no clues as to her identity.

It is not even certain how the woman met her death.

According to tabloid Correio da Manhã, “everything points to her having slipped” and fallen 70 metres onto rocks below.

Firefighters were called to the scene by a couple who discovered the body while out walking.

Says CM, the dead woman’s injuries were very severe – certainly consistent with a fall – and she appeared to have been lying undetected for “more than 24 hours”.

Possibly in her early 30s, the young woman was wearing “walking clothes” and described as “Asian in appearance”.

No personal documents were found, only a car key to a Ford which “has not yet been located”.

Firefighting chief José Pedro told the Resident on Sunday that as far as his service is concerned, there are still no clues as to the dead woman’s identity, or even what she was doing on her own on the clifftop.

Usually, victims’ family members and/ or friends visit the scene of their loved one’s death, and come and talk to first-responders, he agreed, but in this case there has been nothing like that.

“It is very unusual”, he told us.

The body was first taken by lifeboat to Baleeira port, and then transported to Portimão’s office of legal medicine, where an autopsy was to be performed.

Maritime police have handed the investigation over to PJ judicial police which told us over the weekend that they can only give a statement on January 2.
