LISBON’S NATIONAL Museum of Arte Antiga has been forced to close its Albertas Chapel for public safety reasons.
The chapel’s roof timbers and parts of the wall are so badly deteriorated that they are in danger of collapse.
Museum Director Dalila Rodrigues said that the chapel was awaiting “urgent works” to be carried out.
“This winter was particularly difficult given the amount of rain and humidity we had and only served to further weaken the façades, roof and even the garden,” she said.
The Director of the Institute of Portuguese Museums admitted that various museums badly needed restoration work carried out on them but that there were five major projects being carried out at present.
