Murders up in Portugal

CRIME FIGURES in Portugal increased by two per cent last year in relation to 2005, and the number of murders was up by 20.5 per cent, according to an annual internal security report presented by the government.

The increase of two per cent was attributed to two types of crime in particular: domestic violence (30 per cent) and driving without a licence (22 per cent).

For the Secretary of State for Internal Administration, José Magalhães, who presented the report in Lisbon, the increase in these crimes “shames the country”.
