Murder rates

A SURVEY carried out by Eurostat, the EU’s official statistics department, has revealed that Lisbon has the second lowest number of murders in Europe, with 0.68 per 100,000 inhabitants in 2006.

Absolute figures recorded 148 murders in 2006 in Lisbon, compared to none in the capital of Malta, Valetta, which came top in the survey. Of the other 25 EU countries, Estonia’s capital, Tallin revealed registered the most murders with 9.75 per 100,000 inhabitants, followed by Lithuania’s capital Vilnius with 7.95 murders per 100,000 inhabitants.
