Murder charge

PORTIMÃO COURT has decided not to charge five out of the seven gang members that were in preventive prison for the murder of Lagos police chief, Sérgio Martins, in December 2005.

The gang broke through a police barrier at the entrance of Lagos after the robbery of a Multibanco machine in Vila do Bispo went wrong. Martins, who was stationed at the blockade, was shot in the head by one of the group members.

Two suspects, Augusto Suarez and Florentino Ramirez, will be tried for his murder, while the other five have been charged with attempted murder because they fired their weapons during the attempted robbery.
