Municipal swimming pools in Algarve to close due to drought

AMAL, the association of Algarve borough councils, has agreed to close all municipal swimming pools in August and turn off water features, like fountains, as a means to ‘saving water’ in the current situation of extreme drought. The irrigation of municipal open spaces is also to be ‘reduced’ – in some cases stopped altogether. Grassed areas, for example, are to lose their irrigation and be replaced by endemic species, which do not need such a high level of  irrigation. These new measures are expected to be followed by others, including the continued closure of municipal pools through September.
