Mum-to-be forced to travel 200 kms to be attended for obstetric emergency

A 41-year-old pregnant woman – suffering from a rupture in the amniotic sac – was forced to travel over 200 kms in the back of an ambulance on Saturday, trying to find a hospital that would take her. An inquiry has now been opened into how this situation was able to happen: emergency responders initially took the woman from Torres Vedras to a maternity unit in Abrantes that was closed. Doctors in Abrantes managed to stabilise her condition, and she was eventually admitted to Santarém hospital where she and her unborn child are now being ‘accompanied’.
