Braga Hospital is struggling to contain an outbreak of ‘multiresistant bacteria’ (antimicrobial resistance) which has affected 20% of its in-patients. Clinical director Jorge Marques has stressed that “colonisation” of a patient by the bacteria does not automatically mean they become ‘infected’. “Roughly 90% of the colonised do not go on to develop any kind of infection”, he told reporters. That said, four deaths appear to be linked to the outbreak, although their causes are still under investigation.
