Carlos Sousa retained his overall lead in the Portuguese off-road championship after finishing a one-second runner-up to Filipe Campos during a rain-hit Baja Serra de Monchique rally last weekend.

The challenging conditions saw Team Loule’s Miguel Farrajota, still lying in third after the opening super special stage, retire from the race later alongside top title contender Miguel Barbosa.

Meanwhile, Portugal’s candidature for inclusion in the 2010 World Rally Championship calendar was accepted, and now awaits confirmation by the sport’s international federation council.
