Manchester City underlined their status as the world’s richest football club with an audacious, but ultimately unsuccessful, 100 million euro-plus bid for AC Milan’s Brazilian attacking midfielder Kaka.
While the potential move and its associated personal riches which would have more than double the previous world record held by the Zinedine Zidane’s transfer to Real Madrid last year’s FIFA Footballer of theYear said he would be staying at Milan.
Eastlands makers and shakers did, however, add Hamburg midfielder Nigel de Jong and West Ham striker Craig Bellamy for a combined fee of 30 million euros to their previous 12 million Wayne Bridge acquisition from Chelsea.
