Corporal Nuno Policarpo died on Saturday night
A 47-year-old police corporal with the GNR, stationed in Loulé, died last night while on duty, the victim of a traffic accident.
Nuno Policarpo lost his life “ensuring the safety of citizens”, said the police force in a post on social media sending condolences to the agent’s family and friends.
The official site of the Portuguese presidency has also marked the occasion in a note in which said the president – currently on a visit to São Tomé e Príncipe – has already transmitted his condolences to Corporal Policarpo’s wife in a telephone call.
It is not clear from the information officially released what caused the accident/ whether there were any other victims, or indeed where it took place.
Jornal Alto Alentejo however has posted that it involved a collision between a car and the motorbike which Corporal Policarpo was riding.
English-speaking community platform Safe Communities Portugal has been one of the over 1,000 reactions to the news saying: “Our Association Safe Communities Portugal sends its sincere condolences to the family, colleagues and friends of Corporal Nuno Policarpo. He gave his life serving others and helped many people in the community. RIP”.
Elsewhere, minister for interior administration, José Luís Carneiro has posted a heartfelt message, in which he said: “It was with great sadness that I received the news of the death on duty of Corporal Nuno Policarpo, from the Loulé Territorial Detachment of the GNR – Republican National Guard, following a collision on the night of this Saturday, August 26th.
“In this moment of mourning and deep pain, I want to send, on behalf of myself and the Government, my heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and the National Republican Guard.
“I would also like to address a word of recognition and gratitude to all the Guardsmen who, on a daily basis, give their best and risk their lives in defense of the community and the rule of law.
