JOSÉ MOURINHO, the former Chelsea coach, is expected to participate in the official campaign to promote the Algarve as a tourist destination throughout Europe.
Although the campaign is still being finalised, Portuguese daily newspapers quoted the Secretary of State for Tourism, Bernardo Trindade, earlier this week as confirming Mourinho’s role.
Other Portuguese celebrities mentioned as being in negotiations to take part in the promotion include Fado singer Mariza, Triathlon World Champion Vanessa Fernandes, conductor Joana Carneiro and the architect Câncio Martins. The campaign budget was not revealed but it is expected to be more than in previous years. For the Allgarve 2007 campaign, the government spent about three million euros.
The Portuguese tourism official travelled this week to the UK, where he was expected to meet with Mohamed al-Fayed, owner of Harrod’s, where Portugal is to be promoted as a tourist destination.
