Motorway disruption

A timber lorry travelling westbound on the A22 left the carriageway between the A2 and the IC1 Junction on Tuesday, August 25.

The vehicle overturned below the embankment and the accident caused major hold ups for traffic during the afternoon and well into the night as heavy recovery cranes were brought in to lift the damaged vehicle and its trailer.

Other cars and vans were abandoned on the hard shoulder after over heating or running out of fuel during the ensuing traffic jam, causing further disruption.

Roadside assistance vehicles were unable to reach them, with many drivers having to wait many hours for recovery.
