Motorhomers are moved on

Maritime police have forced more than 20 motorhomes to move on from beaches at Barranco, Ingrina, Zavial and Boca do Rio, in the Vila do Bispo council.

Motorhomers are prohibited by law from parking overnight near the beaches in the southwest Alentejo and Costa Vicentina Natural Park, but there are many who still do not meet the rules.

Maritime police Commander Cruz Martins said: “The coastline plan forbids motorhomers from parking in those areas between midnight and 8am.”

Last week officers had informed motorhomers about the law and those who remained in areas where overnight parking was not permitted were eventually forced to leave.

According to police, the majority of motorhomers were of foreign nationality.

Cruz Martins said: “The Maritime police will continue to proceed with the normal patrolling of this area. Motorhomers must be aware and comply with the rules that are established.”

He added that this action is part of a strategy to prevent more serious situations in the summer period.

“In the past, there were lots of problems with motorhomers. We have also detected cases of illegal wild camping in protected areas in the region,” he said.
