Motorcycle racer dies after crash at Estoril racetrack

A 40-year-old motorcycle racer died after crashing his bike during a race at the Estoril racetrack in Cascais on Sunday (September 23).

Sérgio Leitão was competing in a Campeonato Nacional de Velocidade (National Speed Championship) race when he lost control of his motorbike at a bend and crashed.

Another racer told Lusa news agency that it looked like his brakes weren’t working.

Leitão was taken to the hospital but his injuries were too serious. All races were cancelled after the accident.

The Motor Clube Estoril and the national federating of motorcycling have sent their condolences to Leitão’s family, team and friends.
