Michael Schumacher was determined to extend his winning run in front of his home fans at Hockenheim. He was fastest in free training and confirmed his good form by taking pole position ahead of Juan Pablo Montoya, with McLaren teammates Raikkonen and Coulthard occupying the second row. Schumacher way away the fastest and never relinquished his lead. Raikkonen, attempting to close an impossible gap, spun off, and was lucky to walk away from his wrecked car. Button came back from way down the field to snatch second with Alonso in third – but once more, Schumacher reigned supreme.
