MotoGP to return to Portimão in 2022

Portimão racetrack is set to host another MotoGP race in 2022, according to motorsport news website The Race.

Citing “sources in the MotoGP paddock”, the website reports that Portimão will “retain its new place following the pandemic” and host the Portimão GP on April 24, 2022.

While still not official, this report appears to confirm that MotoGP organisers have fully embraced the Algarve International Racetrack (AIA) as a worthy racetrack.

It hosted its first MotoGP race last year, when it welcomed the season finale as part of a reshuffled schedule due to the pandemic. Taking place behind closed doors, the race was won by Portugal’s star pilot Miguel Oliveira.

The championship returned to the Algarve in April, once again without fans in the stands. Victory went to Fabio Quartararo, while Oliveira’s hopes of retaining his title were dashed by a lap six crash.

The Algarve’s third MotoGP race will go ahead between November 5 and 7, with around 67,500 fans due to be in the stands. For tickets (click here).
