Mother who left young children ‘home alone’ for five days ‘absolved’

A mother who left five children, including twin babies, home alone for five days has been ‘absolved’ of crimes of abandonment and domestic violence. The woman left her children – aged between one and 12 years – in Bragança, while she went to Lisbon to try and find a home to rent/ buy African food and do hair braiding. She tasked her eldest child with looking after the younger ones and thought an adult friend would be on hand to help out, but it did not work out well. The children were taken into care briefly before the mother was able to prove she was fit to take them back. The judge ruled that the case had not proved ‘wilful misconduct’ on the part of the mother.
