Mother of missing child alters testimony

Leonor Cipriano, the mother of missing child Joana, has altered her initial statement to police and is now claiming that her daughter was killed by her uncle, João Manuel Domingos Cipriano.

According to a statement released by her lawyer Marcos Aragão Correia, she is now alleging that Joaõ Cipriano persuaded her to give her daughter to people outside her own family in exchange for money.

When this plan was unsuccessful, Leonor Cipriano claims that João Cipriano then killed her daughter.

The new statement was presented to officials at the court in Faro on January 16 by Marcos Aragão Correia, where it will be assessed for further consideration.

Joana went missing from her home in Figueira, near Portimão, on September 12, 2004 and has never been found.

Both her mother and uncle were convicted of her murder, abuse and concealing a body and are currently serving sentences between 19 and 20 years for their crimes.
