After five failed attempts to host the FIFA World Cup, Morocco is getting creative. Say reports, discussions are ongoing with Spain and Portugal – separated from Morocco by just 14 kms of water – to see if the three countries could find a way of bidding together. Moroccans are also contemplating a ‘North African bid’ with Tunisia and Algeria, but the Iberian cooperation “may be more politically straightforward”, says the Moroccan press.
Up till now all approaches in this regard are being kept low-key.
If the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, backed by the country’s king, decide to partner with Spain and Portugal, it will be the first pan-continental bid to host the World Cup.
