More than half State hospitals in technical bankruptcy

More than half Portugal’s public hospitals were in technical bankruptcy in 2020, with accounts in the red exceeding over a billion euros. According to data from the Council of Public Finances, some of the ‘worst offenders’ include the Algarve’s hospital authority, as well as centres in Lisbon, Coimbra and Setúbal. Says the Ordem dos Médicos (general medical council), the SNS State health system is “forever asking more and paying less”. Very much like the situation with teachers (see below), the system is teetering due to doctors quitting.
