The fifth annual Costa Vicentina Fun Dog Show, which features competitions like the dog with the waggliest tail and the dog looking most like its owner, is to be held on Sunday, April 28 at Vale da Telha, Aljezur.
The show will be hosted on and between the terraced frontages of two neighbouring restaurants around the landmark Pines Roundabout, thanks to the hospitality of José Orelha at the Restaurante Vale da Telha and Hugo Nanitas of Hugo’s Bar.
The large area of land behind the two establishments will be open for car parking.
The show is hosted by the charity Friends of AEZA and all profits from the show go to AEZA, the Association for Environment and Animal Protection of Aljezur, a non-profit association based in this west coast town, whose main objective is to provide abandoned animals decent conditions to live in, with shelter, food, care and health care.
The funds will then be used towards repairs needed at the Aljezur kennels.
The show will begin at 11am, and the stalls selling local art, handmade crafts, beauty wares, pet products, jams, chutneys, jewellery, bric-a-brac and good quality second hand clothes will also be open from that time.
All the competitions will be judged by Carla Rodrigues from the Miss Minnie mobile dog grooming and will begin at noon, comprising 17 different classes competing for rosettes and prizes, including:
Best rescue dog; best pedigree; veteran 8+ years; puppies less than 1 year; prettiest bitch; most handsome dog; agility; owner and dog look-alike; waggliest tail; best trick; sit and stay, ending with Best in Show.
The admission fee is €3 for the initial class entered, then €2 for subsequent classes with the same dog. Spectator admission is via a €2 donation to AEZA.
Also – for anyone coming from the south coast along the N120 at the western end of the A22 motorway – there will, on the day, be signposts from the N120 junction with the hill up to Vale Da Telha (on the left, a few hundred yards before you reach the town of Aljezur itself) directing people to the venue.
The organisers ask that all dogs should be on a lead, and owners should bring their dog’s vaccination record.
The two bars hosting the event will be open throughout the day serving their full range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. There will also be a BBQ selling burgers and sausages. It is hoped there will also be a raffle for a superb doggie hamper – any donations to help fill it would be gratefully received!
The show is organised by Friends of AEZA, a group of Vale da Telha locals who give their time and energy freely to benefit the animals in the Aljezur shelter, and they will also have their customary cake and savoury stall on site.
