More babies born in Portugal but birthrate  still “very low”

More babies were born in Portugal last year than in 2022, but still the numbers are “very low”. This is the bottom line of data emerging from the ‘footprick test’, carried out on newborns within the first few days of birth. In total, the country registered 89,764 newborns – an increase of 2.8% on numbers in 2022, and the highest number since 2019, albeit a long way from replacing the number of deaths (117,809).
