I seem to recollect a few readers’ groans about over-emphasis of expensive wines by my friend Patrick in some of his recent articles.
Well, if this applies to you or even to anyone interested in what can be done with low budget price/quality wines, try this one for size – Montinho São Miguel 2012.
This wine won a Gold Medal for Portuguese red wines under €10 at this year’s Decanter wine magazine’s prestigious London wine competition. I can do no better than quote their comments: “Stunning for the price, this is juicy and floral with excellent grip, layered blueberry and cassis flavours and a nice touch of oak.”
If you are looking for a medium-weight red wine which you can happily drink on its own or with light meat dishes, easy drinking with no harsh edges, then this is the one for you.
Produced by the Redondo, Alentejo, family producer Casa Agricola Alexandre Relvas amongst his wide range of wines, it is available mainly at Continente but sometimes elsewhere, at around €4 or possibly even less.
