Monchique pledges €30,000 to buy neighbouring council replacement engine

Following the “total destruction” of a Portimão fire engine fighting the summer’s first major fire in Monchique on Monday (click here), the rural council has pledged €30,000 to its neighbouring firefighters so they can buy a replacement in time for the peak fire season.

Said Mayor Rui André it is the least the council feels it can do, as Portimão firefighters were on Monchique’s patch, fighting to save woodland when the damage occurred.

The money is expected to be handed over in the next few days.

According to Correio da Manhã, the cost of a new fire engine is €150,000 – 80% of which will be paid by the national authority for Civil Protection.
