Monchique plans to sterilise “all” stray animals this year

An ambitious new initiative by Monchique council plans to sterilise all stray animals in the municipality by the end of the year.

In a statement, Monchique council says it will be working with Associação Animais de Rua after a cooperation protocol was signed on Thursday, July 2. And pet owners “with proven financial difficulties” will be able to sterilise their pets through this initiative.

Although the sterilisation drive is open to cats and dogs, it will focus mostly on controlling the stray cat population.

The council led by Rui André stressed that the initiative will also promote voluntary work and the fostering and adoption of these animals.

So far, 50 wild cats from seven colonies in Monchique have already been sterilised via the initiative.
