The best presunto (Portugal’s typical smoked ham) that the hilly town of Monchique has to offer will be on display this month at the popular Feira do Presunto, to take place on the weekend of July 23-24.
Featuring around 40 exhibitors, the event will also boast regional specialties such as honey, homemade bread, jams and the famous Medronho liqueur.
“In a general way, we are repeating the same formula from previous years,” deputy mayor Luís Grade told regional news website Sulinformação.
“There will also be a company providing donkey trips, which usually delight our younger visitors,” he added.
Grade said the event “almost did not take place this year” as the area where it usually takes place becomes “very dusty” and fails to offer visitors an enjoyable experience.
The council has since carried out ground levelling work and believes the unpleasant situation will not repeat itself this year.
The plan now is to complete a project that has been in the pipeline for a long time – the construction of a “multi-use pavilion”, so that Monchique can have a location to host the several festivals and parties it hosts every year.
