Going against the government and the troika’s recommendations, Monchique Câmara will be granting its employees a day off on Carnival Day, February 12.
Mayor Rui André says the celebrations will be an opportunity for the population to enjoy the party mood and will serve as an “escape valve” from the crisis.
He said Carnival Tuesday had been enjoyed as an “optional” bank holiday for decades and that several companies had already planned February 12 as a day off. The Mayor believes public employees are being penalised enough under the 2013 State Budget.
