The Resident is proud to announce the success of this year’s Mamamaratona 4 at the Fissul centre in Silves last weekend. As the only English language newspaper sponsoring this event, we would like to congratulate everyone involved for their hard work in making this fund-raiser such a fantastic occasion. Many thanks to all who participated – it wouldn’t have happened without you!
Willing runners and spectators arrived in droves to pledge their support to Mamamaratona and raise much-needed funds to go towards a nuclear medicine unit for the Algarve, which will aid the cancer diagnostic process.
There were more stalls than ever before at this year’s event, with people from many local businesses giving up their Sunday and turning up at the crack of dawn to give their backing to the charity.
The committee pulled out all the stops to ensure great entertainment for the day, with artistes travelling overnight from Porto to play to the crowd. Fiona Almeida from Big Fish, the company marketing the event, was overjoyed with the response and willingness of all the volunteers who participated in the race. “The only shock was the heat,” she commented. “With temperatures rising to 36ºC on the day, some of the artistes ended up performing to the crowd from off stage, seeking shade under the Fissul centre’s entrance.”
Clive Dunn us proud!
Home was the proud sponsor of Clive Dunn this year, who, according to spectators, after completing the five kilometre course, looked as though he had simply taken a stroll round Silves. Everyone was delighted with Clive’s efforts and those of his friend, Mark Dobbin, who has accompanied him at every Mamamaratona so far. Clive commented: “It was good to see so many people willing to make the effort in aid of this worthy cause, especially at a time in history when people seem more concerned with killing each other.”
Big Fish would like to remind all volunteers that if they did not receive a T-shirt on the day, please visit the AOA (Algarve Oncological Association) stand at BLiP, or contact Tonneke Beysens on 282 089 420 or firstname.lastname@example.org. T-shirts can also be purchased from the above contact details. Final counts are currently taking place to add up the total amount raised by Mamamaratona 4. The Resident will publish the figure as soon as it has been confirmed. Watch this space!
