Missing Portuguese student in UK left “all belongings, including wallet”

A 29-year-old Portuguese student has gone missing from Brighton University in the UK, sparking fears for his safety.

As we write, Facebook appeals are being shared throughout the net with friends asking for any information on the whereabouts of Diogo Manuel Martins Alves Moreira.

Sussex police has already explained that the young man’s disappearance is “totally out of character” and that he has left behind him “all his belongings, including his wallet with all its contents”.

It appears Diogo – pictured in kitchen overalls – was last seen and heard from six days ago (Tuesday July 14).

He was officially reported missing two days later, say police.

The last known sighting of Diogo was in the early hours of Tuesday morning, when he left a friend’s house, near Brighton railway station.

The circumstances of his departure are also baffling. A childhood friend named only as Vítor told Antena Lusa, a radio station for the Portuguese community in the UK and Ireland, that Diogo was staying the night with a friend, as his roommate had his parents staying over and there was no space for him.

“They watched a film and went to bed. At 4am this friend woke up to go to the bathroom and Diogo was no longer there.”

The young man from Espinho (Aveiro district) is understood to have lost his mobile phone during a festival at the weekend, so friends could not get in touch with him that way.

Appeals started going out almost immediately, with notices posted in Brighton that actually caused one young woman to write on Facebook that she had seen someone “looking just like Diogo but visibly disoriented” in Peacehaven – a town close by.

“We went to look for him there,” Vítor told the station – but Diogo’s friends found no sign of him.

“He has a lot of friends who are really worried about him”, Vítor added.

As searches go on in the UK, friends and family in Espinho are also leafleting Diogo’s description in case for some reason he had decided to return to Portugal.

Diogo is described as of average build with short dark hair and brown eyes. He is believed to have been wearing jeans when he was last seen.

Unsurprisingly, police mention that he has a Portuguese accent.

Sergeant Alvin Lee told reporters: “We are becoming increasingly concerned for Diogo as this is totally out of character for him”.
