A father, son and employee died truly terrible deaths after being overcome by fumes and falling into a tank of effluent at a pig farm in Carregueira (in the Santarém borough of Chamusca).
A second son is in a critical condition as technicians from the Ministry of Labour are now investigating how the tragedy happened. Reports suggest the employee collapsed first, with the other men diving in to help.
Rescue workers had to drain the six-metre-deep tank to recover the bodies.
