SC Olhanense were looking for their first win since January 11 when they entertained Varzim at the José Arcanjo Stadium, Olhão on Sunday.
Following three defeats and a draw it was imperative that Olhanense win if they were to maintain their push for promotion.
Both sides started nervously and it was the visitors who should have taken the lead after 20 minutes when Marco Matias missed a golden opportunity.
On the half hour Djalmir went close for Olhanense and as the interval approached Ukra, skipper Rui Duarte and Toy could have scored.
In the 56th minute Messi replaced the ever industrious Rui Baião and within a minute had scored. Ukra’s cross from the left found Messi whose shot from 12 metres took a deflection, much to the delight of the home fans, and nestled in the bottom right-hand corner of the net.
A few minutes later Castro should have added to the score but his finish was poor. In a bizarre last twenty minutes, Varzim had five players booked and two sent off by referee João Ferreira.
Olhanense remain in 2nd place in Liga Vitalis, two points behind Santa Clara who could only draw 1-1 at Portimonense.
Tomorrow (Saturday) Olhanense fans leave at 6.00am for the seven-hour trip to Porto where they will watch the top-of-the-table clash between Porto and Sporting.
A Sunday morning tour of the port lodges on the Douro will no doubt put the supporters in fine fettle to cheer on their team as they take on Boa vista, who languish in 14th place following their 2-0 defeat at D.Aves.
