Meningitis vaccination campaign continues

THE SECOND phase of a vaccination campaign against Meningitis C is now underway at centros de saúde across the Algarve.

The campaign, targeting the under 18s, aims to rapidly reduce the number of deaths and health problems caused by the illness.

The vaccination campaign forms part of the Ministry for Health’s national vaccination programme and has been developed over two years. The first phase was undertaken during 2006, covering children aged between 16 months and nine years of age.

The second phase aims to cover children and teenagers born between 1989 and 1996, with the objective of vaccinating 95 per cent of children within these age groups.

From now until the end of March, children born in the years 1989, 1990 and 1991, will be called for vaccinations, to be followed by those born in 1992, 1993 and1994 who will be vaccinated between April and June. Those born in 1995 and 1996 will be vaccinated between July and September.

For further information about the campaign, contact your local centro de saúde.
