Mega police operation ongoing in Lisbon ‘gangland’ neighbourhoods

Monday morning has seen yet another ‘mega police operation’ in action in Lisbon’s gangland neighbourhoods, including tower-block communities of Sintra and Loures.

The objective, as ever, is the combat of weapons possession and trafficking.

According to Diário de Notícas, there are at least 30 warrants active for house searches in an investigation that began “around three months ago”.

This is almost exactly the time father-of-two João Carlos Silva was fatally shot as he drove his family to a birthday party along the Sintra stretch of the A16.

His killers had been involved in a failed security van heist (click here), and to date have never been found.

A police source has told DN that today’s searches are also concentrating on other outlying areas around the capital, including Cascais and Ameixoeira.

Involved are the PSP’s criminal investigation unit, intervention police, sniffer dogs and dozens of other agents.
